Pitch's sensitive side (his "real side" in my opinion) does come out occasionally (especially in the book series).  You can actually hear Pitch's voice break in the movie when he is talking to Jack about "longing for a family" (in Antarctica).  This is because Pitch did have a family once... and at one point he longed for nothing more than to see his little girl once more...

(If you have not read the books, then you would not know who Katherine is... I highly encourage you to check the books out, because her story with Pitch is amazing!  I can't wait to see what Joyce has in store for these two--though I do have my predictions. ^-^)
